Detailed article on Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship

http://www.ssireview.org/articles/entry/social_entrepreneurship_the_case_for_definition/

This article was great and really gives a detailed examination of what social innovation can create and produce. It also gives examples of people who have done these things such as Steve Jobs (Apple) and Steve Wozniak. Entrepreneurial context is described as the starting point for an entrepreneur. In the case of Steve Jobs it was enhancing the worlds computer system and aspiring to have a PC in each household. The article also describes in great details some of the characteristics that many Entrepreneurs in today's world have. Some include Inspiration, creativity, and courage. This make sense because you must have the courage to deal with the possibility that your product or inspired dream may not come the first time you try but after hard work and determination one can reach any goal. The article also goes into great detail about the shift form a regualr entrepreneur to a social entrepreneur and the gray line in the middle. It is a great read and think it has alot of information on topics we have discussed in class regularly over this semester. Hope you enjoy.

recession brings new fuels

Are you tired about paying for you gas? well maybe next time you should try and getting it your closest pond. shocked... well according to scientist and business people around the United States algae, that green scum that grows in your Fishbowl and ponds could provide us with oil in a near future. Algae produces and oily compound after photosynthesis so the idea is that if you grow enough algae you can obtain a sustainable biofuel. So far is in a research state, but there is many entrepreneurs betting on it.

Gas to Likely Stay Relatively Cheap this Summer!

Finally, some good news! Does anyone remember how much was gas last year during the summer? Well, in case you don't, it was close to $4/gallon. I don't know about everyone else, but as for me it was truly painful each time I had to go to the gas station. It got to the point that every time I had to fill up my tank it was close to $70. As a college student, I'm not able to afford that amount of money every week just for gas. A new report posted on an MSNBC article, stated that gas would likely stay relatively cheap this summer, averaging $2.23/gallon. That is certainly good news for all of those who are planning to have a road trip and drive to their vacation spots this summer. For more information and details, read the following article:

Mexican Cars Manufacturing Demand

The auto industry in Mexico fell by 41% during the first quarter of 2009 compared to the first quarter of 2008. This is a result of a drop in demand by its biggest buyer, The United States, of 40% and a drop in demand inside Mexico of 26%. This is Mexico's biggest manufacturing industry so how has this decrease in demand affect the country and everyone living in it. If we think the United States has had a lot of layoffs that is nothing compared to Mexico. Mexico has grown to depend too much on the United States and this is very evident especially right now. If something happens to the United States, Mexico is automatically affected even more. This drop in demand, of course, has hurt the Mexican economy but Mexico needs to create an economy that can work with the United States but not depend on it.

Discrimination

Discrimination is one of the first things that we are taught in elementary school. It is an important part of our society and unfortunately is seen on a daily basis in schools, family and even in the working environment. A great example can be taken into strive in an article I came across from the economist and it was about the rich paying more taxes and many people saying it’s not enough. The rich are indeed paying more taxes because there salaries cannot be compared to what they received in the 80’s. But the rich are complaining and taking a stand on what they believe is morally right. They expect to pay the same taxes as the middle class and do not agree with the changes that are taking place. Many people that are categorized as being rich are solving there problems by off shoring “tax evasion and withholding the tax that enables countries to deduct tax automatically and leave it up to the taxpayer to reclaim the money if he can” (economist.com) It is incredible that the rich is doing everything in there power to stay away from paying taxes and how low they have gone to hide there money in another country. Another thing that they are doing is denying there citizenship because if you are a domestic citizen there are a lot of tax breaks at the end of the day.
In my personal opinion, I think that the rich should be taxed more than what they were before. Our economy is not at its peak and needs as much help as it can possibly acquire. The rich need to help the economy and make a difference. The rich are lying and hiding there money not to pay taxes, there has been cases that they have even denied they are citizens just to get the tax break. People like this should be reprimanded and given a lesson to be taught. The government is not discriminating against the rich and middle class. They are doing there job and making our economy a better place to live. Why it that the middle class have always paid there is taxes and never had a problem with it? It’s because they are being loyal to there country and the rich should use the middle class as an example.
This article was great and very detailed with facts on the rich paying more taxes. I recommend if you have a chance to read the entire article and give me your opinion on if the rich are paying more taxes and if we as a society are discriminating against the rich. 2009 College Graduates

The article posted in Business Week describes the job market for the new college graduates of 2009. My entire group is graduating by the end of this year and this article summarizes what we will be experiencing when we start looking for a job. We will be competing with 1.5 million students graduating in 2009 plus 1.8 million degree holding unemployed people. This will make it alot more difficult to get a good job. Also overall starting salaries have decreased by 2.2% from the same time last year.
However, for business students the statistics are a little better. Starting salaries have over all increased by 1% since last year. Finance salaries have increased by 2.3%, and management salaries have increased by 3.6%. The article also says companies have not forgotten about internships. Overall internship oportunities are down by 21% but internship salaries are up by 5%. Companies understand having good employess is important and are trying to maintain talent through the difficult economic time.

Pay-what-you-like Restaurants

A new concept is rising in the business world. More specifically, I'm speaking about restaurants. Many businesses are placing their trust in the hands of their customer, trusting they would do the right thing. Customers come into the restaurants, they have their meals, and then, what it is so surprising is that they pay what they think their meal was worth. This is certainly an enterprising concept but many of the businesses who have ventured into this idea says it pays off with many more visits from their customers and customers paying good prices for their meals. If one day they dont have a lot of money, the next they'll pay more for what they want. It is certainly a "win-win" situation for both parties. I believe it is a great concept and I'm sure it increases customer loyalty. This new concept is being utilized all around the world. For more information read the following article...

Government cracking down on mortgage scams

http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D97D5NQO1.htm

The above article was very appealing to me because it spoke about mortgage modification and how the federal and state mortgages are cracking down. For instance, in the article it states that “government officials said Monday that scammers are seeking to take advantage of borrowers in danger of default by charging them upfront fees of $1,000 to $3,000 for help with loan modification that rarely, if ever, pay off.” (Rugaber & Zibel pg.1) There are a lot of realtors that are taking advantage on consumers that cannot pay for the mortgages monthly. This article is a great example on how to stay away from them and look at the bigger picture.

Uncounted Layoffs

This article from Business Weeks talks about the million of people that have lost their jobs that are not counted in the unemployment figures the government gives out and they have no rights to any unemployment benefits. These people are freelancers or personal contractors that worked with many large companies and some earned more than $3000 a month. When the economy started going down so did their contracts and business in general. The major problem is these people have no right to collect any kind of unemployment and are not counted in the unemployment figures given by the government. There are also the people that worked full time and have had their hours reduced to part time. They have not lost their job but the change in income is so drastic that they can not meet their financial obligations. These people since they are still working can not collect any unemployment but are still in the same or worse situation as many people that have been laid off completely.
In the state of New York about 15% of workers are free lancers and now with the financial circumstances are trying to figure out a way to make ends meet. They had address the mayor of the city and he is trying to pass the the proposed "Unemployment Protection Fund." This fund would require the federal or state government to match about $300 for every $1,000 a Freelancers Union member voluntarily paid into a fund that could be drawn upon during lean times when work is scarce. If this would have been in place earlier then many freelancers would have some kind of safety net.
Personally I believe some major restructuring needs to be done with unemployment benefits and who is eligible. The article said, the Bureau of Labor Statistics hasn't adapted to the realities of the modern workforce, and it's a disgrace that we don't have a true picture of what's going on." Like the article says they need to readjust and include all kind of workers that contribute to the economy of the country. Their should be no reason why if someone had their hours cut in half, and their paycheck as well they should not be receiving unemployment benefits.

New Global Currency!!!

For many years, the dollar has been dominant over any other currency. The United States, as we all know, is facing an economic crisis and it is being felt all across the world. Recently, China has expressed that it wants to create a new global currency comprised of a basket of global currencies, which would be controlled by the International Monetary Fund. Although the United States and Europe have not paid much to attention to the decision, if such thing was to happen the dollar would weaken to extreme measures. It is important to note that China does hold approximately close to $1 trillion in treasuries and other government debt. This is just China's way to gain more power and to have their government's voice heard. The dollar is and will be for many years to come the trading currency of the world and many do agree with such a statement. For the full article please click on the following link:

Paul Krugman on Economic Inequality

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kwA-CwFK5A (Paul Krugman-short version)

Hey everyone,

This is a great video I saw on Youtube that shows Paul Krugman (Economist) explaining the increase in economic inequality and where he believes it began and what influenced it. Here is my take on what I saw in the video.
Krugman showed examples of why income inequality has grown since the Reagan era in which union busts became more apparent. With politicians backing this it created a huge downfall for unionization in America. He does not reject the idea that globalization has had some effect as well but show how years ago both Canada and the US had about 30 percent of the workforce unionized. Since then the US has decreased to about 11 percent while Canada stayed about the same at 30 percent. Both countries have faced the same globalizing markets yet only in America has the amount of Unionized workers dropped so considerably. Along with this many other countries with operations such as Walmart have the huge organizations unionized while this is seldom seen here in America. In America it tends to be the public sector that is mainly unionized and the private sector that is at the other end of the spectrum.

Linked In

This article from Fortune.com is talking about the professional networking site that the professor spoke about in class. Linkedin.com has been dramatically growing within the last couple of months as a result of the economic situation in the country. Right now, the fastest growing city is Detroit where many layoffs have occurred. In one month the traffic to the site has more than doubled from 3.3 million in January 2009 to 6.9 million in February 2009. Linkedin.com greatly suffered from its competitors like facebook.com, and twitter.com and many thought that it would never recover. But linkedin is different because it is for professional networking only something both facebook and twitter do not have. This has caused such a growth in the company from 2 continuous years of negative profit to $100 Million in profit this year.

Unemployment County by County

When I came across this article, it came to my surprised that “unemployment rates were generally higher across the country in January from December, and as a result the graphics editors decided to add a new color category to the map key: one for counties with unemployment rates of 20 percent or higher.” (Rampell) The counties without jobs have increased a large amount compared to other years. We are experiencing one of the worst recessions and it came to a surprise to many people. This article also shows which county has higher or lower unemployment rates. Below is the article where you can visit and see how your county is doing.

This article from Business Week talks about the new rise in prices of stocks of Citibank. The CEO Vikram Pandit, sent out a memo yesterday that caused the stock to raise from $1 to $1.44 today. This memo said that these first 2 months of 2009 have been profitable and had the best performance since the last quarter of 2007. He continues with saying the bank is adequately capitalized and has passed stringent self-imposed stress tests. This is great news as Gary Hager of Integrated Wealth Management in Edison, N.J. said, "I think the plan will work and they will lead the business out of this by the end of 2009; it's a screaming buy." He thinks that Citibank will be a "poster child" for other banks to follow to get out of the situation they are today. Some economist say the recession will finish by the end of this year if others follow in Citibank's footsteps.

Some critics are saying the only way the recession can start to finish is by eliminating the bad asset books many banks like Citibank are carrying. They are saying that all bank stocks might look attractive right now but they are still high-risk because the stock can be up by 50% one minute but down the next minute.

Personally, I believe Citibank's news is the light at the end of the tunnel. This is probably the first piece of good news I read in business since 2007. I do think Citibank has the potential to set the way for other banks to follow, but they are not completely out of harms way yet. They still have a lot of things to do but at least it is a start. I do not agree that the recession will be completely over by the end of 2009, but I do believe it will be much better than at the start.

Conclusion to Long-Standing Ethical Dilemma

President Obama made a very important decision regarding research on embryonic stem cells. Unlike President Bush, Obama opened the doors in order for the research to start, with federal and private dollars. According to the President, "Promoting science isn't just about providing resources, it is also about protecting free and open inquiry. It is about letting scientists like those here today do their jobs, free from manipulation or coercion, and listening to what they tell us, even when it's inconvenient especially when it's inconvenient. It is about ensuring that scientific data is never distorted or concealed to serve a political agenda and that we make scientific decisions based on facts, not ideology." Now there is new hope for those who suffer from diseases such as diabetes and alzheimer; this new research can even provide a cure for paralysis. Of course, the opposition believes this is an unethical matter and it causes more division within our country. In my opinion, I believe President Obama made a great decision. This new research will open the doors to many scientist in order to find cures. I personally know persons with diabetes and alzheimer's and if this new research can help them, then I see nothing wrong with it. The opposition just has their own agenda, not allowing them to see the positive side of the research. What can be more miraculous than curing your sister or your father from any of the diseases that up to know have no known cure. I don't know any one yet who doesn't want to find a cure. Business Ethics

This article was very interesting because it spoke about ethics, which was one of our main topics in last week’s class. We all have heard of business ethics in one way or another especially if you work for a big corporation. A great example can be taken into account as the article states “some employees would rather leave a company rather than report ethical lapses”. They do not want to be known as whistleblowers and are scared of the outcome when it does get out. That is one of the main reasons why Business Ethics has become so important in today’s society, we even have college core classes that emphasize on this subject. I recommend you to read more in dept into the article when you have a chance.

Organizational Culture and Climate

The article below is a great summary to the subject that we spoke about in our last class. An organizations culture and climate can greatly affect how a company performs. As we discussed in class, organizational climate has more to do with the overall attitudes and feelings of the employees in that organization. The organizations culture tends to be what upper management would like the overall climate to be.
An organization's culture generally tends to be an offset of the type of CEO in the organization, as the article explains. For instance a CEO who has an entrepreneur mindset would tend to create a culture that makes fast decisions, takes risks and likes to innovate. A great example of this would be Apple computers. On the other end of the spectrum would be insurance companies and banks who tend to have cultures that avoid risk.
Depending on the industry and upper management styles will greatly affect the type of culture that one works in but either way it is important as a manager and employee to know that culture and climate exists within an organization. How one feels about a particular company culture can greatly affect how much job satisfaction you will receive from the job and it is important to know a companies culture ideals before you work for them.

Mexico's peso weakens to new record low

http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D96M22S80.htm

The above article is very interesting and is a great example on how the economy is not only affecting the United States but as well as other countries. In this article it talked about how the Mexican peso has weakened as low as 15.4 against the dollar which is extremely low.

For instance as the article states, “in an effort to stop the peso's fall, the central bank auctioned off the foreign reserves at an average rate of 15.37 pesos to the dollar.” We as a society are seeing our economy go through a change that is affecting us everyday. I recommend you to take a few minutes and read this article.

Obama plans major shifts in Spending!

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/27/us/politics/27web-budget.html?_r=1&ref=economy

The above article is a great example on how Obama is trying to make a change and help our economy get stronger. On Thursday, February 26, 2009 he proposed a ten year budget plan that will “reflect his determination in the face of recession and invest trillion of dollars and his own political capital in reshaping the nation’s priorities.” (Calmes pg.) Obama is planning to address the health care problems we are having as well as the global warming and education. Obama will have to work night and day to change the outcome of where our economy is headed to.

A great example can be taken into account as the Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnel states “I have serious concerns with this budget, which demands hardworking American families and job creators turn over more of their hard-earned money to the government to pay for unprecedented spending increases.” I agree with the Senate, Mitch McConnel because it is going to be hard for American families to get a pay cut once again, and them knowing its going to the government will make them more furious.

Faces of Social Entrepreneurship

http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2008/03/09/magazine/0309-FACES_index.html

Above is a great artcile from the New York Times. The site is a slide show of four great examples of people who have sought to fill a societal need by starting their own organizations, with support from grant-giving nonprofits like Ashoka’s Youth Venture and Echoing Green.

‘‘Our generation is replacing signs and protests with individual actions,’’ says Kyle Taylor, 23, an advocate for the social-entrepreneur movement who started his own mentoring organization. ‘‘This is our civil rights movement and what will define our generation.’’

These are great examples of how a single person who thinks "big" can literally change the world with some determination and hard work. Each has proven that we all can find ways to improve the communities we live in and come from.

Pop! Tech Conference

In this article from business week Pop! Tech hosted a conference in Northport, Maine. This conference was designed as a weekend MBA seminar to teach these social entrepreneurial how the business portion of their non-profit organization needed to be run. The article said, "They had passion, which had taken them this far. But, they lacked entrepreneurial training. This became immediately apparent in the first session." These great entrepreneurial knew what to do to achieve the social goal they wanted but not how to manage the business aspect of the organization. This conference taught the entrepreneurial how to brand their product/service, how to determine the impact, and how to make connections.

I think this conference is a great opportunity for these entrepreneurial. Like the article states they have the passion that got them the idea to start everything but many where having problems and losing valuable resources dealing with the business portion of the organization. This seminar made these non-profit business owners see the real potential of their idea and the possibilities that still lie ahead.

thankfully, nations all over the world are getting together to fight back, also the present administration have seen that this threats are real and are putting resources and intelligence into it.

Corporate Responsibility in the new Economy

Many companies are struggling to keep the business going with these new economic times, but how can they still be corporate responsible without having a financial burden on the company. This article describes what many were talking about at the Business for Corporate Responsibility Conference in New York. They suggest that companies will "focus more than they used to on assessing and managing global risks such as energy security, climate change, and geopolitical conflicts." The article also says that companies are going to use this responsibility of the economy to differentiate their product and make it more appealing the earth cautious consumer. The article states, "In a brutal retail market, some will try to differentiate themselves by developing ethical supply chains to boost consumer confidence, or support micro-entrepreneurship to lift purchasing power in emerging economies."

I believe this is a great idea and what we will be seeing in the next couple of months. Many companies that have a lot of competitors are going to differentiate their product by saying it is more healthy for the planet. I think this is a great marketing tool and that it will work. It shows the company is taking responsibility for the environment. With these economic times this is a great idea to survive the tough part until the market stabilizes again.

Madoff Scandal

http://www.forbes.com/2008/12/12/madoff-ponzi-hedge-pf-ii-in_rl_1212croesus_inl.html

This article is about the Madoff scandal and talks about all the charities and schools that lost money because of this man's greed. He acted completely irresponsible and he damaged much of the goodwill provided many organizations ivested in him. Also the auditing company did not fullfill its regulations. As bad as I feel for the people who invested and lost money one must also be aware of anything that sounds too good to be true usually is. In their case they were recieving 10-12 percent returns for years (the early investors who did recieve money) which is much higher yields then normal. Pehaps these people put faith in the SEC and other government regulation programs to make sure everything that was going on was legit. Anyways nowadays everyone is trying a get rich quick scheme so investors should always be cautious and know exactly how their money is working for them. COMMENT.

Social Entrepreneurship

In class we discussed the topic of social entrepreneurship. A social entrepreneur is someone who recognizes a social problem and uses entrepreneurial principles to organize, create, and manage a venture to make social change. A social entrepreneur is someone who makes our society a better place and will never take "no" for an answer. There were some examples discussed in class such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and The Clinton Foundation. According to Bill and Melinda Gates, "We created the Gates Foundation in 2000 because we believe in the principle that every human life has equal worth. The life of an impoverished child in a developing country is as precious as the life of a middle-class kid in a developed one." The foundation helps the poor and the sick all around the world. On the other hand, there's is the Bill Clinton Foundation. The William J. Clinton Foundation focuses on worldwide issues that demand urgent action, solutions, and measurable results such as global climate change, HIV/AIDS in the developing world, childhood obesity and economic opportunity in the United States, and economic development in Africa and Latin America. Both men have demonstrated to be true social entrepreneurs, they saw a problem and found solutions. For more information on both of these foundations, please visit the following websites:

New Business Structures of 2009

This article is very scary to me. It is explaining that this year (2009) the structure of many companies will be changing and many positions that have once had power will be unless this new year. For example, Human Resourse Mangers will not be a big deal because very few companies are hiring and they have shifted their ideas that people do not necessarily need talet to perform a job, so the complex selection process are useless. Another position that will lose power is Marketing Director, this year the budget will be so tight that very few dollars will be used in advertising and therefore, less power to the marketing directors. The last position mentioned, and the most important for our class is involving corporate social responsibility. The article said, "as for the corporate-social-responsibility supremo, he will be told to take a gap year indefinitely." This article suggests that the person involved with social responsibility will just disapper altogether. The only position the article said will gain power is the Cheif Financial Officer, he will be moving into the nice corner office but he will have people asking for miracles on the books to make the companies look the best posible. So this year for the CFO's will be a very difficult one.

This article has been a huge eye opener and very scary to think about especailly since I will be graduating in the next couple of months. I do understand that the economic situation has drastically changed and it has shown no sign of getting better but seeing all these positions go from very important to useless is still hard to absorb. The only thing we can do right now is hope for the best.

Obama against Wall Street Executives

In this article from the New York Times, Obama calls the executives of wall street "Irresponsible" and "Shameful." This is due to the millions of dollars executives received in bonuses on top of their huge salaries. This money came from the bail out the government had given these financial institutions to prevent their collapse.

This entire article shows how these financial institutions have NO social corporate responsibility.Obama stated, “We all need to take responsibility, and this includes executives at major financial firms who turned to the American people, hat in hand, when they were in trouble, even as they paid themselves their customary lavish bonuses. As I said last week, that’s the height of irresponsibility. That’s shameful. And that’s exactly the kind of disregard for the costs and consequences of their actions that brought about this crisis: a culture of narrow self-interest and short-term gain at the expense of everything else.” Here Obama states how social corporate responsibility is not important to these firms and it is not part of their culture. This exact issue is what has brought the economy to where it is today.

Obama reacted to this news by including in the new bailout package a cap salary for executives of $500,000 and any bonuses will have to come from the stocks and not cash. This I believe is the best idea, that way the executives can not use tax payers dollars to continue the same habits that cause the big problem in the first place. These executives need to learn that they need to change their way of doing business and first they need to take responsibility for the damage they have already done, and secondly they need to fix and restructure their entire organization.

how to save your newspaper... if you want of course

Hello everybody, hope your Monday was better than mine. Anyways my father came back for his trip so I should have more time to invest in the class.
Today I got my Time Magazine in the mail. The front page of this week’s edition (February 16, 2009) reads “How to save your NEWSPAPER”. I went right to it (know that I have time to read).
In essence it talks about how newspapers and magazines around the United States are going to a very bad time, trying to adapt to the new technologies in a way that produces a profit for them.

You’ve heard the stories of newspaper companies filing for bankruptcy and all that. The article also talks about how the new generations of readers are so accustomed to the idea that what they see or read online is free.
I for one have always thought that “There is not such a thing as a free meal”, but at the same time I always believed that just like Google newspapers online got paid by advertisement; but it seems that this is not the case, and that in fact newspapers, magazines, are in some kind of limbo where they haven’t found that something that helps them get paid reasonably for the content they provide.

The author (Walter Issacson) offers a very simple solution; micropayments, in summary you pay for what you read, the problem with his idea (in my opinion) is that he is relying on a technology that is not around the corner, in the sense that;
There would be the necessity of a standard accepted by everyone, for this kind of transaction.
It would have to work on every device where the consumer wants to get his or her content (iphone, palm, Linux, PC).

Therefore, I thought of a different solution, which relies on technology that exists now. How about if providers get together and come up with a device like the kindle, subsidized down to let’s say…99 (I’ll buy it) with an anywhere-download-capability (like the kindle). Where I pay for wait I read… say $.05-$.10 per article, this way, the user feels he or she is being charged fairly, and on the side of the content provider it can focus its resources better on articles and topics that the market says are valuable. And at the end of the month the user gets charged on his credit card, PayPal account, whatever.

In conclusion I think that valuable content should be rewarded, and that newspapers, and Magazines are very important for communities, whether they are electronic or on paper, they offer first and foremost the service of journalism that helps uncover the injustices and heroes of our world.

What is your take on online content??

Do you think it should be free???

What do you think of my idea??

Please comment. :)

Sustainable Development through Lessons

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_7042/is_9_128/ai_n28128668/pg_1

This article is a perfect example of what I was talking about in class and what the teacher asked me to blog about. This article is an example of how the proverb "When you give a man a fish you feed him for a day, when you teach him to fish you feed him for a lifetime," can be applied perfectly when discussing how to help underdeveloped societies. When speaking about sustainable development one is implying helping a society survive on it owns while being environmentally responsible.
The article is about The Ugandan church and how they created a project in various underdeveloped parts of Africa. The key philosophy of the project is simple: give a cow to a family that proves it can care for it. Also the cow they give the family, once the demonstrate they can provide for the cow, is pregnant which means that the family can benefit formt he offspring of the cow as well. James Mutayitwako says "Some of the most satisfying results can be seen in the families' health because of the improved nutrition."
Read the article and tell me what you think. I would love to get some feedback.

Information Technology and its affect on CSR

http://www.environmentalleader.com/2009/01/23/corporate-social-responsibility-an-emerging-cio-mandate/

This is the hyperlink to a great article that speaks about the future of Information Technology in regards to Corporate Social Responsibility. CSR is a growth opportunity, and corporate leaders can play a critical role in connecting IT with this business strategy by providing the tools to enable this process to happen. Everyday that passes in a corporate world the more necessary and prudent it is to have top of the line methods of communication whether it be to suppliers, partners, customers or any stakeholder in general. Eric Riddleberger, the author of the article, works for IBM which is known for having great CSR policies in place.

Corporate Social Responsibility

http://www.forbes.com/2008/10/16/csr-doesnt-pay-lead-corprespons08-cx_dv_1016vogel.html

At this site is an article called CSR Doesn't Pay, which expels the myth about companies doing well when having a good CSR plan in action. The article is in no way saying it is a bad thing to have a great CSR plan but merely saying there is weak proof that a company does any better revenue wise because of a good CSR plan. It says that there is no proof that it does any worse either. Well I say if this is the case that a company is relatively unaffected by its CSR plan then they should all have one in an effort to better our society. Although I disagree that CSR does not affect revenue because this article is not taking into account the priceless ability of reputation. Companies with great enviornmental policies tend to be shown in a better light. Either way I like the article because it gives a different perspective on corporate social responsibility.

Social Responsability in my life

Corporate social responsability is actively affecting my everyday life. Right now in everystore from luxury department stores to grocery stores you can purchase bags, to use each time you go to the store; therefore, decreasing the use of plastic bags. Also, bottled water companies have changed the design of their bottles to use less plastic, like Zephryhills. Another company that is high on corporate social responsibility is Starbucks. Their cups and cup holders are all from recycled materials. Even entire cities have changed their way of doing things to be more socially responsible. Here in Miami-Dade county the city delivered recycling bins to each home and picks them up every two weeks, to help reuse some materials.

All of these decisions by stores, bottle companies, coffee shops, and even cities affect my daily life. I see all these changes going on around me and I understand why they are necessary. As many stress we all live in one planet. This planet we must conserve! Now companies have taken the extra financial cost but an essential cost to maintain the planet for many generations to come. I personally did buy these reuseable bags at stores, did switch to using recycled materials, and did start recycling at my home.

Starbucks: CEO Responsibilities

The recession going on around the world is also affecting one of the biggest coffee chains in the country. In this article, Starbucks will be closing 900 stores mostly in the United States, but some overseas. These stores will put more than 6,000 store employees and 700 corporate employees out of a job. The CEO Howard Schultz cut his salary for 2009 from $1.2 million to just under $10,000.

The CEO of this company is an example for others to follow. Starbucks stocks and profits fell because of the recession but it was also because of over expansion a decision that came from the CEO of the company. Schultz has seen what happened to his company, and has now taken responsibility for it. He has set the example for all the employees of the company by cutting his salary by 83%. If he can make this sacrafice then so can the other managers of the company that according to the article have kept the same salaries from 2008 without any bonus. Schultz is an example to the CEO's of the banks and of the automobile industry.

Since both the banking and the automobile industry have been some of the hardest hit during the recession their CEO's need to take responsiblity for where they have taken their companies and the mistakes they made in the process. After the government gave the banks billions of dollars to help keep the companies alive, CEO's and top managers headed on vacation and on trips to the spa. None of this should have occured, these CEO's should have done what Schultz did and cut their own salaries to help the companies their decisions destroyed.

Corporate Social Responsibility and My Life

The relevance of C.S.R. to my life is very simple. After graduating from Florida International University I would like to work for a large corporation. By doing so, I would like my employer to care about all of its employees. Labor policies of corporations are a part of social responsibility that it is very relevant to my life. Furthermore, in a few years I do expect to have my own children and it is very important that corporations that manufacture items for kids are aware of every danger that can arise. Without social responsibility, many more kids would be dying or hurting themselves every year due to malfunctions of products. I would encourage all of you to write the relevance of corporate social responsibility and its relevance to your life.

Flying Geese

The flying geese model was first introduced by Kaname Akamatsu in the 1930s. It was a model that emphasize the views of nations as teachers and learners, where as most advanced nations will help other nations cath-up to them. This analogy can be used in a different context. For example, lessons of leadership can be learned such as the following: "People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier because they are traveling on the thrust of one another." Overall, The analogy is that the leader is in the front forging a path to a desired destination. The lead goose also cuts through air, which makes flying easier for the geese that follow. This act makes the followers’ job of flying easier. Of course, the lead goose doesn’t ask for or expect praise for making the others’ jobs easier as explained by David A. Timpe, C.P.A. Many more lessons learned from the geese analogy can be found in the website below.

Sustainability ?

A week Ago, I read an article in BusinessWeeK.com (click here) about how MBA programs around the United States are including more and more " Green" Classes. I think this change comes in perfect harmony with the Energy and environment Agenda proclaimed by the White House. I wish I’ve had those classes. I'm sure that in the near future, we will see more "green Jobs" a total new industry in solar, wind and thermal energy hungry for individuals with a special set of skills all aimed to get more from our environment without destroying it in the process.

I defintently like the idea of a future where I can hear that countries are competing in the area of alternative; and, see the Untied States of America become as the New Energy for America plan puts it "Make the U.S. a Leader on Climate Change".

Obama Begins right away!

Cuba's President Raul Castro, right, speaks to students from his car after AP – Cuba's President Raul Castro, right, speaks to students from his car after visiting the Latin American …

HAVANA – Raul Castro says Barack Obama seems like a good guy, and his brother Fidel says he's certain of Obama's honesty. The new U.S. president wants to sit down and negotiate, and is in a better position to do so than any other since Eisenhower.

But making up is hard to do. To restore relations and end the U.S. embargo, Obama would have to drop demands for democracy on the island, or Cuba would have to accept them — both unlikely scenarios.

Never since a young Fidel Castro traveled to the United States in 1959 have hopes for U.S.-Cuba relations been higher, nor the obstacles to closer relations fewer. Among the positive signs:

• An ailing Fidel Castro handed the presidency to his brother Raul in 2006, removing a symbolic hurdle to closer ties.

• Obama didn't need the anti-Castro vote in Florida, once thought indispensable. In any case, a recent poll indicates most Cuban-Americans in the heart of Florida's exile community want an end to the embargo that bars most U.S.-Cuba trade and travel.

• A stream of Latin American leaders has visited Havana in recent weeks, and the region is beginning to speak with one voice against the U.S. embargo.

• Obama took heat during the campaign for saying he'd sit down with a Castro — and won anyway.

• And the Castros, who covered Havana with images of former President George W. Bush as a bloody-fanged vampire, actually seem to like the new president.

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez was convinced of this after a private meeting with the elder Castro Wednesday, telling reporters that Fidel told her Obama is an honest man — "un hombre sincero."

Raul Castro chimed in: "He seems like a good man."

Fidel Castro said Thursday in his first essay in more than a month that he watched Obama's inaugural speech and has had "no doubt of the honesty with which Obama ... expresses his ideas."

Obama's Cuba policy appears clear: He'll quickly end limits imposed by the Bush administration on the number of trips Cuban-Americans can make to see relatives, and on the amount of money they can send home. He signed an order Thursday to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay, which Cubans considered to be an affront to their patrimony — the U.S. naval base was built on land permanently leased from Cuba under terms imposed when American troops occupied the island in 1903.

But Obama said during the presidential campaign that he would keep the embargo in force, using it as a bargaining chip for democratic change in Cuba.

"The road to freedom for all Cubans must begin with justice for Cuba's political prisoners, the rights of free speech, a free press and freedom of assembly, and it must lead to elections that are free and fair," Obama said as he outlined his Latin America policy last May.

Cuban officials recoil at the thought of a U.S. president telling them how to run their country.

"It would cost us our dignity. Under pressure we won't do anything," Miguel Alvarez, senior adviser to the president of Cuba's National Assembly, told The Associated Press. "That's very Cuban."

One problem, says Dan Erikson of the Inter-American Dialogue in Washington, is that there is no high-profile figure in the United States with a background in Cuba to lead the charge for normalization, like war veterans John Kerry and John McCain did for U.S.-Vietnamese relations.

Erikson said it will be hard to overcome the "inertia" of U.S. policy, which for 50 years has been based on the increasingly improbable hope that isolating the island and draining it of foreign capital will weaken the government's hand and allow an opposition to flourish.

"This despite the fact that almost no one thinks this policy will be successful at its goal: achieving democracy in Cuba," he said.

Many observers suggest the U.S. could have far more impact by unilaterally ending the embargo and removing the sanctions Cuba's government uses to explain away the island's poverty and other restrictions on what Cubans can say or do. That way, Cubans would be able to judge their rulers on their own merits.

"I don't see any downside to ending the embargo. The embargo at this point is an anachronism that makes us look foolish," said Wayne Smith, the former chief of the U.S. mission in Havana.

Ending the embargo would require backing down from entrenched positions neither side seems ready to abandon. It would also require an act of Congress, since lawmakers wrote key parts of the restrictions into law in 1992 and 1996.

But relations also could be revolutionized if either side takes smaller steps that carry minimal political cost.

Cuba, for example, could free political dissidents from its prisons. Raul Castro said last month he'd be willing to send them and their families to the United States in exchange for the freedom of five Cubans locked up in U.S. prisons as spies.

The United States could lift restrictions that bar most Americans from traveling to Cuba, sending a million ambassadors of democracy fanning out across the island every year. Cuban officials say they'd happily take in the tourists, for the hard currency they would bring to the economy.

"If you remove the travel restrictions, the embargo becomes irrelevant," a Cuban official said on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to discuss policy.

While the politicians mull their next moves, ordinary Cubans are infused with a hope the island hasn't seen in quite some time.

"Everything changed over there today," Havana resident Roberto Gonzalez marveled as Obama took the oath of office Tuesday. Gonzalez, 40, mugged for tourist photos with a dachshund wearing an "Obama-Biden" pin, hoping he might make a few dollars in tips.

"I can see the day that Barack Obama will step onto Cuban soil," he said. "That day isn't very far off."
